Fun Facts About Diamonds
Diamonds are one of the most luxurious gemstones of all time. Their existence started before the dinosaurs, and they have become the symbol of gifts and expression of love. Here are our top interesting facts about diamonds.
One of the Hardest Natural Substances on Earth
Diamonds are one of the hardest natural materials in existence, and diamonds are more than 50 times harder than anything that you can find in nature. Because of this, the only thing that is able to cut through diamonds is other diamonds.
There are Diamonds in Space
Scientists have discovered that there are white dwarf stars in space that contain diamond cores. They have also discovered that the largest diamond in the galaxy is 2.27 thousand trillion tons, which comes out to 10 billion carats.
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
The famous Beetle’s song, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” was actually used to name a diamond that was discovered in the sky, which is now named Lucy. Lucy is a planet which consists of 75% pure diamond. The planet is located 50 light years away from Earth.
Something that a lot of people do not know is that not all diamonds are colorless. Within nature, you will discover diamonds of a range of colors spanning from red, blue, pink, black, brown, and yellow. These diamonds are more rare than the typical colorless stones.
During the cutting process of diamonds, they can lose up to 50% of their natural weight. This is due to the fact that the diamond is rough before this process, and needs to be cut and polished before being up to consumer and producer standards.
Diamonds Can Be Burned
Diamonds can be burned believe it or not, they just need to reach a very high temperature for this to be possible. The diamond must be heated to a range of 1290-1650 degrees fahrenheit in order to burn. House fires can usually reach this temperature range.
Largest Diamond on Earth
As we mentioned, there have been massive discoveries of diamonds in space, but what is the largest diamond discovered here on Earth? To answer that question, we have to go back to 1905, when the Cullinan diamond was discovered, weighing in at 3,106 carats.
Diamonds Were Created Billions of Years Ago
Scientists have traced the origins of diamonds here on Earth back to billions of years ago. They were created by a combination of tremendous pressure with the addition of temperatures of 1600+ degrees fahrenheit, at a depth of 90-120 miles below Earth’s surface.
Only Some Are Considered “Gem Quality”
Out of all of the diamonds mined on Earth, only approximately 30% of them are considered gem quality. While gem quality does not have a precise meaning, it is used to describe a diamond that is of finer quality.
